I believe it was John Dillinger who was asked why he robbed banks. His answer was simply “Because that is where the money is.”
If your practice, hospital, or business is gathering more and more data on its customers and patients, it is becoming a data “bank” with a larger and larger bulls-eye on it, because in the modern world of regulations and data theft THAT IS WHERE THE MONEY IS.
While everyone is focusing on the latest software or hardware or encryption to protect data, very few organizations take a serious look at what data they could do without, how long to keep data, and how to get rid of it when it is no longer essential. If you don’t have it, it cannot be lost, stolen, compromised, leaked, or accessed.
